Silent illumination practice
Silent illumination (mozhao in Chinese) is a Chan approach to zazen that emphasizes non-conceptual awareness—sitting without trying to fix the mind or pursue insight, but resting in the clarity of awareness itself. Hongzhi Zhengjue (1091–1157) was one of the great exponents of this method, and his writings shaped how silent illumination is taught in contemporary Chan centers. This retreat uses his work as a lens for understanding the practice.
What to expect
This is a traditional residential sesshin format: multiple daily sitting periods (zazen), walking meditation (kinhin), silent meals eaten in the meditation hall using formal oryoki practice, and liturgy (chanting). Caretaking—work practice around the center—is part of the schedule. There will be periods of silence maintained throughout. The retreat runs four days, July 16–19.
Without specific schedule details from the center, a typical Chan sesshin day starts early (often 5–6 a.m.), includes 4–6 sitting periods of 40 minutes each with kinhin between them, meals in the meditation hall, and free time in the evening. Dokusan (private meetings with a teacher) may be offered depending on the retreat structure.
Lodging and participation
This is residential only—you stay at the center. Bring comfortable clothes for sitting and movement, and a robe or dark clothing if you have one (the center may provide robes or guidelines). Noble silence (not speaking unless necessary) is maintained.
