Ango Intensive
with Geoffrey Shugen Arnold·Soto Zen
Online four-day intensive on language and Zen practice, led by the Zen Center of New York City. Study Hongzhi's teaching verses and shikantaza (silent illumination), with writing sessions exploring how words point beyond themselves.
About this retreat
This four-day online intensive centers on a classical Zen paradox: how language—and particularly teaching verses—can open the gate to direct experience beyond words. Master Hongzhi (1088–1157), a major Soto Zen figure, left a body of verse that later became foundational teaching material in the tradition. Here, you'll study these verses alongside shikantaza (just sitting, or silent illumination), the core Soto practice of zazen without object or goal.
The retreat weaves together study and sitting with writing practice—prose and poetry composed in response to the material. This isn't creative writing for its own sake, but an exploration of how turning words, contemplative language, and direct practice inform each other. If you've sat sesshin before and want to work with language as a gate into practice, or if you're drawn to the intellectual side of Zen alongside sitting, this format makes space for both.
The center has not yet published details about the online structure—whether sessions are live with a set schedule, recorded, or self-paced, or what time zone accommodations are offered. Contact the Zen Center of New York City directly for specifics on how to participate.
