Peaceful Dwelling: Meditation Intensive
with Danica Shoan Ankele, Gokan Bonebakker · Zen
Three-day weekend intensive at Zen Center of New York City focused on zazen as wakeful relaxation. Morning and evening sitting periods with afternoons free for self-directed practice, concluding with the Sunday Morning Program.
This weekend format splits the difference between a full residential sesshin and a day-sit schedule. You'll sit in the morning and evening with the center's community, but afternoons are yours — time to rest, walk the grounds, or continue sitting on your own. The retreat frames zazen not as intense effort but as "wakeful, spacious relaxation," which shapes the pacing and teaching approach.
Saturday and Sunday mornings follow a structured sesshin schedule; Sunday concludes with the center's Morning Program rather than ending early. If you're new to sitting or prefer a gentler pace than a full five-day sesshin, this format lets you experience group practice without the full immersion.
