Saturday One-Day Sitting
Soto Zen
One-day silent sitting at Green Gulch Farm featuring zazen, kinhin, a dharma talk, and silent meals. Open to all levels; newcomers receive an orientation.
About this retreat
San Francisco Zen Center's one-day sittings at Green Gulch Farm are entry points into the Soto Zen practice rhythm without the commitment of a multi-day sesshin. You'll sit zazen (meditation), walk kinhin (slow walking meditation between periods), hear a dharma talk, and eat in silence — the core structure of any sesshin, compressed into a single day.
Green Gulch Farm is SFZC's rural practice site in Marin County, set on working farmland. The setting and the inclusion of garden walking signal the center's integration of practice with manual work and land stewardship — characteristic of Soto Zen training.
The schedule is gentle by design. You're not signing up for nine hours of zazen; one-day sittings typically run five to six hours total, with breaks and a meal. The orientation for newcomers means you won't arrive confused about where to sit or what "noble silence" means in practice.
