Saturday One-Day Sitting, Online

Soto Zen

Soto Zen online sesshin zazen kinhin

Online all-day sesshin in the Soto Zen tradition, 6:30am to 6:00pm. Traditional schedule with sitting periods, kinhin, and meals. Participants commit to the full day.

This is a full-day online sesshin—a traditional Soto Zen all-day meditation practice compressed into one Saturday. Unlike a typical weekend or week-long retreat, a one-day sit maintains the structure and rhythm of formal practice without the overnight commitment: sitting periods, kinhin (walking meditation), and meals, running from 6:30am to 6:00pm.

Soto Zen emphasizes shikantaza, or "just sitting"—zazen practice without koans or specific objects of focus. In a one-day format, you'll move through multiple sitting periods (typically 30–40 minutes each, separated by kinhin) and eat at least one formal meal, often in silence. The day creates its own momentum; even one full day of continuous practice has a different quality than individual sits at home.

Because this is online, you'll be sitting at home on Zoom or a similar platform. You'll see the teacher and other participants on screen, and the schedule will be guided live. This works well for people with sitting experience and a quiet space; the main trade-off is the absence of physical presence in a practice hall, which many find grounding. Committing to the full day—not dropping in or out—matters; the schedule builds on continuity.
