2026 Spring Sesshin
with Valerie Forstman · Sanbo Zen
Six-day silent sesshin in the Sanbo Zen tradition led by Associate Master Valerie Forstman. Held March 16–22, 2026, at Mountain Cloud Zen Center in Northern New Mexico. Available online (full-time or talks-only) or in-person (residential, commuter, or camping). Includes zazen, kinhin, chanting, dokusan, and Q&A with Sanbo Zen teachers.
The retreat
Mountain Cloud's spring sesshin runs six days of traditional Zen practice—zazen (sitting meditation), kinhin (walking meditation), chanting, and dokusan (private teacher meetings). The retreat title, "Seeds of Practice: Planting Peace in Turbulent Times," signals a retreat grounded in engaged practice rather than pure technique. The title itself reflects the Northern New Mexico setting, where drought and environmental stress frame the retreat's context, but the framing is not preachy: you're sitting together, offering practice for the peace of the world.
Sanbo Zen and Valerie Forstman
Valerie Forstman leads as a Sanbo Zen Associate Master. Sanbo Zen is a modern Japanese lineage founded by Yasutani Roshi, known for integrating Rinzai koan work with Soto zazen practice and for teaching lay practitioners and Westerners. This means you'll encounter both intensive sitting and dialogue with the teacher—dokusan is built into the schedule, not optional.
In-person logistics
Mountain Cloud is situated on a rural Northern New Mexico campus with rustic cabins, a cottage, and bell tent camping available. The zendo, main building, and kinhin labyrinth are on-site. Living arrangements are assigned by the center based on availability after your application is accepted. Commuting is also an option if you have local lodging.
Online participation
The online track is structured, not a simple livestream. You get an orientation session on night one, daily Dharma talk and Q&A recordings, optional small-group support sessions with teachers on days 1–3, and one-on-one practice guidance with teacher Carolyn Seburn if you're doing full-time attendance. A closing circle and post-retreat integration session help you land the practice. If you can't attend full-time, you can register for talks and Q&A only, without the group work and interviews.
What to expect
Sesshin means "touching the heart." The schedule is strict: extended zazen periods, kinhin, meals, rest, and dokusan with either Forstman (in-person) or Seburn (online). You observe noble silence. The format is age-old, not new—this is classical Zen retreat practice held in a contemporary setting across online and residential options.
Cost and access
Online full-time is $240; talks-only is $75. In-person ranges from $825 (commuter) to $1,050 (shared cabin). The center offers 25% scholarships and 15% member discount. In-person attendance requires an application to ensure sesshin is appropriate for you.

Spring is coming, even while – here in Northern New Mexico – we wish for more seasonal temps, deeper snows, and a relief to record-setting drought. Elsewhere, the environment shifts and groans in other ways. At the same time, right in the midst, the inexhaustible wellspring of this practice waters seeds of peace – seeds we plant and nurture during sesshin.
Join us – at Mountain Cloud and in the cloud – for six days of deeply shared silence, offering our practice for the peace of the whole world.
Experience the unique opportunity of extended practice with support from:
The profound silence and stillness of the age-old sesshin format.
The deep container provided by Sanbo Zen Associate Master Valerie Forstman.
Dokusan (one-on-one interviews) conducted in person by Valerie and online by Zen Teacher Carolyn Seburn.
Q&A and small group discussion sessions with Sanbo Zen teachers.

Sesshin is a term used in Zen to refer to an intensive period of meditation practice, typically lasting several days to a week or more. It literally means “touching or meeting of the heart.” During sesshin, practitioners engage in extended periods of sitting meditation (zazen), walking meditation (kinhin), chanting, and other forms of Zen practice under the guidance of a teacher. Sesshin is often held in a retreat setting, with participants observing noble silence and following a strict schedule of meditation sessions interspersed with breaks for rest and meals. The purpose of sesshin is to deepen one’s meditation practice, cultivate mindfulness, and gain insight into the nature of reality.
