Just Sit Saturday@ASZC

Soto Zen

Soto Zen day-sit zazen kinhin beginner-friendly

Three-hour Saturday morning sit at Atlanta Soto Zen Center. Alternating 25-minute zazen and 5-minute walking meditation from 9 AM to noon. Open to all levels; a good weekly practice anchor or prep for longer retreats.

Just Sit Saturday is a weekly three-hour sit designed to fit into a schedule — morning only, one day a week. The format is straightforward: you alternate between 25-minute periods of zazen (sitting meditation) and 5-minute kinhin (walking meditation). It's a natural rhythm, breaking up the sitting and giving your legs a rest without breaking concentration.

Soto Zen emphasizes shikantaza — just sitting, without a particular object of focus or technique. The practice is the point; there's no goal beyond showing up and sitting. A weekly sit like this one works well for people building a home practice or testing out extended meditation before committing to a multi-day sesshin (residential retreat).

Atlanta Soto Zen Center is the host; if you're new to the center, arriving a few minutes early to ask about where to sit and how the group operates is standard. Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move freely into seiza (kneeling posture) or cross-legged position.
